I took the boys out last night to eat dinner with a good friend of mine and his family. They were passing through Birmingham, on their way back from the beach, and since we don't get to see each other that often, we decided to meet at Habaneros for dinner. My friend has one seven year-old boy and two twin boys, who just turned one a few weeks ago.
Phoenix enjoyed playing with the seven year-old while sitting at the table, and Fox enjoyed eating everything in sight. After dinner, I was taking the boys home when suddenly I noticed that Phoenix had loosened his seatbelt. The belt was no longer laying across his chest. He had pulled the belt up and over his head and it was incredibly slack. I told him immediately to put his seatbelt back into its proper position, but he refused to cooperate. So, I quickly pulled over, got out of the car, and readjusted the belt. I was very firm with him for loosening the belt, and for disobeying me. I told him how important it is that we always wear our seatbelt while riding in the car.
Well, his feelings were hurt because I was firm with him. He pouted in the backseat for the rest of the ride home. He kept telling me things like, "Daddy, you aren't going to get a treasure" (a reference to his Day School where each student gets a treasure at the end of the day for good behavior). He also said he was going to cancel the Disney trip and that there would be no Halloween this year.
When we got home, his mood hadn't improved much. As we climbed the stairs to his bedroom, he said, "Daddy, I'm mad and the only thing that will make me happy again is to see Mimi" (which is what he calls my mom). Of course when I mentioned this to my mom on the phone later, her heart melted. Both boys have such good relationships with my parents and Wendy's parents. I feel very fortunate that we can all live in the same town.
