Every night when I tuck Phoenix in, we read three stories. I try to weave in a Bible story every once in a while so he can start to learn and appreciate the familiar stories I learned when I was young. I also want him to have an interest in the Bible and to learn about God's love and Jesus' sacrifice. But instead of jumping right in with the story tonight, I decided to sing the song that lists all of the New Testament books. The song is incredibly simple. It just goes through the names of all 27 New Testament books, but the melody helps children to memorize them. If you are familiar with the order of each book, you know that Hebrews comes first, then the book of James. Therefore, the song goes, "...Hebrews, James..." and continues on through the rest of the books.
Well, Phoenix perked up when he heard the name "James," because in the Thomas the Tank Engine series, there is a train named "James." And Phoenix absolutely loves Thomas the Train. When he heard me sing "James," he looked at me and said, "James?" And I said, "Yeah, there's a book of the Bible named James." Then he got a confused look on his face and asked, "Why is he bruised?" It took me a moment to realize that when he heard me say "Hebrews" he thought I said "He was bruised." Apparently, Phoenix thought James had fallen into some kind of mishap that left him bruised.
