Punching the Ticket

I want to teach Phoenix and Fox the importance of attending church and getting involved in Bible classes, ministries, missions, etc. I want them to know that they should do these things not because it will earn them a place in heaven or because they are simply a list of rules that one absent-mindedly follows. Rather, I want to teach them first above Gods love, grace and mercy and that we show our love for him and for each other by attending church, studying the Bible, and serving each other.

One of these teachable moments I have with Phoenix each Sunday is when the contribution basket is passed. I write a check and place it in the basket and I try to give Phoenix a little money that he can put in. I explain that we give our money to help those that are in need.

Yesterday morning I gave Phoenix a dollar to place in the contribution basket. He turned to the front of the auditorium, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the basket. He looked down at the dollar, then at me and asked, "Is this my ticket?"

Dad and I had a difficult time stifling our laughter. He said it in such a cute, innocent manner. However, I couldn't help but think that some people do treat outward religious acts as a ticket to heaven. They believe they won't get to heaven unless they DO enough. I want my children to understand that the work has already been done. Our ticket to heaven was punched thousands of years ago on a hill called Calvary. It's a gift. Now, what are we going to do with that knowledge? Do we accept in humble obedience and submit to God's will, or do we try to continue to live under the burden of Law?

I understand so much more about Gods relationship to us now that I have children of my own.
